Incitatus was the favorite horse of Caligula, mad emperor of Ancient Rome. Incitatus was said to have a wing of the palace to himself, wore a purple blanket, the color of royalty, and ate oats with gold leaf from an ivory manger. Allegedly, Caligula even wanted to make him a consul of the senate, one of the highest levels of the aristocracy. However, all of these accounts were written after Caligula was killed, by the people who assassinated him. Modern historians now theorize that these were exaggerated or even fabricated in order to justify their actions and the new rule.
