In October of 1918 a single messenger pigeon named Cher Ami defeated the odds and was able to fly through both enemy and friendly fire to deliver a message to the American soldiers who were firing upon their own men. He sustained multiple injuries, but flew the 25 miles in as many minutes. He is depicted here in an Art Nouveau style blended with World War I propaganda posters, wings spread in front of golden rays as he flies over red poppies.
